Dial-Up Tips

Fine tuning your dial-up connection on Windows 95 & 98 is necessary for optimum operation, even if you've used the Windows Internet Connection Wizard.

1.  Check your dial-up network connection properties:

Close all programs.  At the desktop, double-click 'My Computer'.  Then, double-click 'Dial-Up Networking'.  Locate your 'Datavoice' icon and right-click once on it, then left-click once on 'Properties'.

General Tab:
Make sure your home area code is entered in 'Area Code'
The 7-digit local access number should be entered in 'Telephone Number'
'Country Code' should be "United States of America (1)"
'Use Area Code and Dialing Properties' should be Checked
Make sure your modem is shown in the 'Connect Using' section

Click 'Configure'
Make sure 'Maximum Speed' is set for 115200
Click 'Connection Tab'
'Data Bits' should be 8
'Parity' should be None
'Stop Bits' should be 1

In the Call Preferences' section,
'Wait for Dial-Tone Before Dialing' should be Checked
'Cancel the call if not connected within 60 seconds' should be Checked

Click 'Options Tab'
'Bring Up Terminal Window Before Dialing' and
'Bring Up Terminal Window After Dialing' should both be Un-Checked

Click 'OK' to leave the Modem Configuration

Click 'Server Types'
'Type of Dial-Up Server' should be 'PPP: Internet . . .'
All 5 check-boxes in 'Advanced Options' should be Un-Checked
The only item checked should be 'TCP/IP' in the Allowed Network Protocols' section

Click 'TCP/IP Settings'
'Server Assigned IP Address' should be selected (dotted)
'Specify Name Server Addresses' should be selected (dotted)
Primary DNS should be 207.166.192.30
Secondary DNS should be 207.166.192.31
'Use IP Header Compression' should be Checked
'Use Default Gateway on Remote Network' should be Checked

Click 'OK', Click 'OK' again and close Dial-Up Networking

2.  Check Modem Properties

At the desktop, Double-click 'My Computer'.  Then, double-click 'Control Panel'.  Double-click 'Modems'

Click 'Dialing Properties'
Make sure your home area code is entered in 'Area Code'
If you have call waiting on your phone line, make sure 'To Disable Call Waiting Dial:' is Checked
Enter the call waiting code (usually *70 - check with your phone company)

Click 'OK' and Click 'OK' again to return to the Control Panel

3.  Check Network Components

Still in Control Panel, double-click 'Network'

In the Network Componects area, scroll down to find 'TCP/IP -> Dial Up Adapter'.  It might also be called just 'TCP/IP'
Left-click once on 'TCP/IP', then click 'Properties'  (if you have Windows 98 you'll also have to click another 'OK')

In the 'IP Address' Tab, make sure 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically' is Selected (dotted)

Click the 'WINS Configuration Tab'.  Make sure 'Disable WINS Resolution" is Selected (dotted)

Click the 'DNS Configuration Tab'.  Make sure 'Disable DNS' is Selected (dotted)

Click OK, Click OK again.  Windows will probably want to re-boot now, if anything was changed in the 'Network Components' area.  Go ahead and select 'Reboot Now'.  If Windows doesn't ask to reboot, close the control panel and click Start / Shutdown / Restart to manually re-boot.
